Kitcat
Given that BD engines themselves are going for $16-20K, the $21K car is like buying a BD with a free Caterham thrown in as a deal sweetener. Actually kinda tempting.
alpinaturbo
Driving fast on backroad in RHD car is challenging: risking to pass slower traffic outweighs the cost benefit in my view. I've driven RHD cars in RHD countries, including Japan, and RHD cars in USA: I found it ok in city and general utility use, but on backroad such as what we have in California it becomes an impossible task to pass anybody safely. And that stops al the fun.
scannon
My long gone '53 MG TD with RHD had a pair of offset mirrors mounted on the left side of the windshield. One faced forward and one back and with them correctly adjusted you could get a good look at oncoming traffic before passing. OTOH, it was so gutless you rarely had a chance to pass anyone. I did enjoy putting my neighbors German Shepard in the left seat and driving around town. In the '60s that caused a lot of stares and oncoming cars pulling over. Croc
2001 Caterham SV with Zetec and T9. I have seen this car somewhere before but cannot put my finger on it - Sevens & Elans website perhaps? It is a striking color scheme. I like the red interior. On Ebay with 11 hours to run. Current bids have it at $20100 with reserve not me. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Other-Makes-SV-/252116769848?forcerrptr=true&hash=item3ab3549c38:g:PeUAAOSwIrNWFXRM&item=252116769848 but if you miss it then you can also find it here: http://vintageracecarsales.com/portfolio-view/2001-caterham-sv/ As an aside, vintage race car sales also have a lovely looking original Lotus 11. The period footage video in the ad is really quite remarkable. http://vintageracecarsales.com/portfolio-view/1956-lotus-eleven-series-1/ The 2003 Caterham SV in polished ali and green and with a Duratec has been relisted and the bidding is at $27k http://www.ebay.com/itm/Replica-Kit-Makes-Caterham-Lotus-7-SV-235hp-Duratec-DeDion-5-Speed-/262105656819?forcerrptr=true&hash=item3d06b6edf3:g:MdAAAOSw5VFWHn4W&item=262105656819 A vintage Westfield here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Westfield-1930s-balloon-tires-skip-tooth-mens-bike-/221921947595?hash=item33ab942fcb:g:ZoAAAOSwwbdWK3uC The 1972 yellow Lotus 7 S4 is back, still with BIN of $44995 http://www.ebay.com/itm/Lotus-Super-Seven-S4-/272019029475?forcerrptr=true&hash=item3f5598fde3:g:8KMAAOSwYHxWIlKK&item=272019029475 But remarkably, probably for the first time ever, two S4's are for sale on Fleabay. This orange one is the one that is noted in the chilly ride thread in Member Rides subforum. I saw this car a few months back during the making of the LOG video and it was in fine shape. Definitely not concours but in good original well maintained condition with just the right amount of mild patina that I like. It even has the original hard cover hood - that is very rare - never seen one before. Steel Brothers Lotus 7's were put together better than the ones in the UK. Its electrics lasted the day better than my Caterham's brake lights! It even has a Lotus PALs group meeting photo in the ad. I remember when this car was first imported to the West Coast as it made a forum post at that time. $27500 BIN or make a reasonable offer. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Lotus-Super-Seven-S4-/291595124642?forcerrptr=true&hash=item43e46c7fa2:g:QswAAOSwo0JWKSHl&item=291595124642 Purple Westfield is still around at $19950 http://tulsa.craigslist.org/cto/5249878334.html Stalker track monster at $15000 http://neworleans.craigslist.org/cto/5263210494.html Stalker road car in TX at $24000 http://easttexas.craigslist.org/cto/5241471454.html Blue 2003 Superformance S1 in RI - still for sale at $25000 http://southcoast.craigslist.org/cto/5226272058.html A 1998 Diva Roadster in VA. Diva are not truly of the Lotus 7 mold, being quite a bit heavier, but they have clear sevenesque characteristics. http://images.craigslist.org/00q0q_eELQ9kVfnQl_600x450.jpg a real screamer with Corvette 350 ci V8, Automatic, Vette 4 wheel discs, side exhaust, it is a true roadster with no doors or side windows or top. #6 of 33 made. 8.8 Ford rear end with 3.73 gears, coil over suspension ,rack & pinion steering,15 gallon gas tank, powder coated space frame-using over 250 feet of 16 guage,1.25"steel,& triangulated mag wheels, tinted sun visors, side wind deflectors, side exhaust pipes, hand laminated composite body, 6 white faced gauges, rear trunk, seat belts and wipers. It has flip up racing gas cap. Blue over silver, with black interior, glove box, & tons of build photos from day one in 1998 .titled as a 1998 ASPT, which means assembled from parts. This is a total rocket at well under 5 seconds 0-60 $ weight is only 2000 pounds. The ad is great with lots of build photos and detail - clearly not your usual Craigslist ad. Lots of attention to detail from looking at the photos. Asking $25000 http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/nva/cto/5283382232.html I don't believe it, there is a THIRD Lotus 7 S4 for sale right now. Ferrino
Does anyone have any tips for scouring the European market, please? i.e. decent websites to search. I am very familiar with the UK sites, but with family on the continent and the possibility of a LHD car (not a deal-breaker for me, but a bonus), I am tempted to look further afield, but not sure what the best website are. Croc
This weeks findings from around the web: Two Caterhams from a dealer out west that were listed 2 weeks or so back http://www.ebay.com/itm/Replica-Kit-Makes-Classic-40th-Anniversary-Super-7-LOTUS-7-/321906198558?forcerrptr=true&hash=item4af31ac81e:g:aKMAAOSwKsRWFrtq&item=321906198558 and http://www.ebay.com/itm/Replica-Kit-Makes-DE-DION-LONG-COCKPIT-SUPER-SPRINT-1700cc-LOTUS-7-/321906197629?forcerrptr=true&hash=item4af31ac47d:g:bjoAAOSw~bFWFr4c&item=321906197629 They are also on Craigslist in San Francisco where the dealer is located. Here is a Dutton which is a replica of a Lotus 7 S4....sort of.... I think I would prefer the S4's that were listed last week. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Replica-Kit-Makes-Dutton-B-/262112276668?forcerrptr=true&hash=item3d071bf0bc:g:AwIAAOSwhcJWLWFi&item=262112276668 speaking of which, here is one now, again: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Lotus-Super-Seven-S4-/272019029475?forcerrptr=true&hash=item3f5598fde3:g:8KMAAOSwYHxWIlKK&item=272019029475 I saw one of these 2 days ago running around on track. And a really well done one too. http://images.craigslist.org/00n0n_5RZ2iFmtRFw_600x450.jpg Drive train from a 1970 Ford Cortina GT. The engine and differential have been rebuilt. 4.10 final drive, 4-speed transmission. There are stainless steel seats on both intake and exhaust valves. Cam is an Iskendarian Y-75E, Spax adjustable shocks. The chassis was built using a copy of factory Lotus drawings. The rear fenders and tail light, front suspension pieces, and roll cage are from a Caterham as are the seats and wheels, headlight buckets and brackets. The front fenders and nose cone are Curtis Unlimited reproduction pieces. There is a braille battery and braille battery box and a nippondenso single-wire alternator. There is a clear Wisconsin title and VIN. Asking $13500 which seems quite reasonable. http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/hnp/cto/5283737161.html It was in Oregon but now it is in San Diego? Arch chassis clone for $25500 back again at $25500 http://sandiego.craigslist.org/csd/ctd/5293275015.html A Pre-lit Westfield. Every serious driver should own a car like this for a while. I have had it for 3 years, and have made a number of improvements during my tenure, which is part of the beauty of this car; there is nothing a mechanically oriented person cannot handle as far as maintenance is concerned. This car was factory built in 1984 in Great Britain, and is permanently California street registered as a 1962 under the SB100 provision. In contrast to the relatively common Birkin or Caterham, this is a traditional car, using virtually all of the same running gear as the Lotus Super 7 it emulates, and that similarity is the reason Westfield lost a law suit forcing them to cease and desist production at about 130 vehicles. This is chassis number 52. Some details: Ford Kent Crossflow 1600 Webber DCOE 40 (2) Sierra T-9 5 speed gearbox Escort 3.99 rear end w/LSD SPAX adjustable shocks Working lights and horn Fresh Toyo RA1 tires on 13" Mini-Lites Fuel cell as well as both oil and water catches Serious roll bar Recently turned front rotors and rear drums Several boxes of spares and a short block. My recent "improvements" include a front sway bar, Carter rotary fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator w/gauge, rebuilt the carbs and re-jetted them successfully, rebuilt head, custom seat bottom, rebuilt rear end, and many lesser items. This car is fantastic in AutoX, and makes me feel like I know what I'm doing! 100% garaged when not being driven. This car is street legal and could be a daily driver, but I wouldn't recommend it. I do have a top and windshield wipers but have never considered fitting them. I also have a dry sump oil system for the car, but it too is in a box. Probably known to at least one person on this forum based on the group seven photo in the ad. Looks great - just the right amount of patina with lots of enthusiasm and love by the current owner. There is a strong resemblance to a Lotus, an Americanized Lotus on double steroids. The vehicle is Texas titled as a 1962 Lotus and powered by a very low mileage 2012 6.2 litre LS3 Camaro engine which produces an incredible 530 HP and more than 800 "road shearing" ft-lbs of torque (Dyno Tested) on four brand new TOYO R 888 tires installed just four weeks ago with 15 miles of use. Please note in the pictures the custom built aluminum radiator which rendered excellent service from the extreme southern Texas summers having never overheated, even in heavy traffic. The transmission is a 6L80E automatic; manual shifting is done by using red push buttons on the steering wheel, with gear selection indicated on a dashboard display. The car is weighing in at only 1850 lbs and less than 4000 miles on the odometer. For fastest acceleration a 2800 rpm torque converter is installed. The body is of fiberglass and aluminum. A brake bias adjustment is located on the central tunnel. A master kill switch is installed on the dashboard. The car has a full adjustable suspension including shock absorber set up. In inclement weather the car is custom fitted and protected by a high quality SUNBRELLA brand tonneau cover and a (winter) cold weather full enclosure, which takes only minutes to remove. The car is fully sorted and track ready and even street legal as this is a serious race car that can propel a competent driver from 0-60 MPH in under 3 seconds. More than $ 50,000 is invested in this Brunton Stalker M Class / Lotus and this automotive beast needs a young, more experienced driver who can unleash the mind numbing potential that was built into this car. A "safecart" report can be sent on request. Please do not hesitate to contact me if I can answer any questions. Thank you and happy bidding. Whether you like the styling or not is personal preference. But look at the details in the build - so much effort is clear that this has been built by a fastidious owner. Yellow suspension members is a good looking choice - hard to keep looking pristine but shows the type of build the owner was aiming at. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Other-Makes-LOTUS-2-seater-street-legal-race-car-/121808843664?forcerrptr=true&hash=item1c5c5f7390:g:CnAAAOSwu-BWPkEi&item=121808843664 Currently bidding at $5100 with reserve not met. Kitcat
Speaking of the hard-to-believe category, the Stalker V8 above claims 800 foot lbs of torque. That seems a bit high. Not complaining abt the car, I'd love to have it in my garage, just noting the torque # seems optimistic. If accurate, given the car's light weight, it would seem possible to spin the tires in any gear, making it challenging to drive.
