Mike,

Sounded rather intriguing. 256 HP with lighter weight and a sequential box. I'd find it hard to live with the central instrument stack though. Just bugs me.

 

Somebody needs to buy this and bring it to the gathering at NJMP so I can get a ride!!

Can anyone offer an opinion about a '74 Lotus 7 Series 4 (http://www.taylormadeclassiccars.com/sevens4.html) made in New Zealand by Steel Brothers? Basically, would it have the same collectability as a UK produced Lotus? Would parts interchange? (Not really an issue--who has S4 parts....) But mainly, would this detract from the value? Just wondering if anyone has an opinion.

Interesting question. Lotus licensed the production rights to Steel Brothers of NZ. They were built from exactly the same blueprints, arguably with better quality assembly in NZ. Parts would interchange. Indistinguishable from a regular S4 - I have seen both types side by side and they looked identical to me. Same drivetrain. Would a purist say it is not a real thing and devalue it for that reason? Probably but then they value it higher based on it being shoddily assembled in a drafty chicken shed in the UK basking in the aura of Chapman who probably never saw it, touched it or cared for it. Logic says there should be no difference in value. Emotion says yes to value difference. Which is right? The person who wants the car at the end of the day will pay what they think it is worth.

To me - it was a pretty good deal at $24k given the nice crossflow spec and uprated brakes. At $22k, I think this is probably one of the better bargains out there. I've never been a big fan of the prisoner wheels, but that is a cheap change. The 4 speed and (I'm assuming) live axle are also demerits, but overall a really nice seven. I wonder if it will sell now.

It is really nice - I love a good Crossflow. RHD will keep the price down and would be a non-starter for a lot of people. If I recall correctly he had bids to $22k on Ebay once before and it passed on them. I actually inquired about this car before I ended up buying my maroon 7 and never got a response. Hopefully it finds a new happy home soon.

2014 Birkin in CA

This car was built by Texas Motor Works (Dick Brink)- Registered new in 2014- Note the mileageis in kilometers-Duratec 2.0 liter with Stage I cam, IRS rear, Haltech Sport ECU, Alum flywheel, AT Throttle bodies, Carbon fiber wings (front/ rear), SPC close ratio 5 speed (T-9) , Crower Cam, Panasport wheels- 15", removable Momo steering wheel, full roll cage, full racing harness, Wildwood front brakes, carbon fiber aero screen, carbon fiber rear trunk cover. Never on track - I have been chasing a small transmission leak - no other issues-car is very clean and runs well. The car does nothave standard windshield nor does it have wipers, or heater- The spare tire and mount are included but not installed.

2005 Brunton Super Stalker. Looks like just the regular Buick V6 - no mention of SC or engine bay photos. Does have an interesting owner made cockpit roof.

body is fiberglass, frame is steel square tubing, has 4 link rear suspension with chevy 10 bolt and limited slip diff. adjustable coil overs front and rear, 1998 buick regal gs engine fuel injected v6 with supercharger, 5 speed manual transmission, rack and pinion steering, quick release racing steering wheel, carbon fiber dash panel, very quick accelerating car that's just as much at home on the race track as it is on the street. its registered in California under sb500 so its SMOG EXEMPT. I hate to get rid of it but I am moving over seas

engine is leaking coolant through the exhaust pipes I believe through the intake gasket. I have the top end gasket kit but haven't had time to replace it. minor paint chips and scratches from normal wear and tear. gulping doors are home made and unfinished. they are fiberglass shells with no inner structure, they can be easily removed to make it a roadster again. front tires should be replaced soon.

Ultra reliable Toyota engine, tranny, and drivetrain. Not the typical ford cosworth engine that requires constant love and attention. Goes like a bat out of hell. Also have extra identical engine in case you want to build it up more. Would be open to a trade for something that is equally as fun and has 4 seats(wife won't let me take the kids in this one...). Stuff I might go for needs to be pre smog and can't have any major issues.

Hi All -

I'm new to the group and serious about buying a seven. I enjoy track days and would really like to be more connected to the experience than behind the wheel of a 3500 lbs sportscar.

 

I'd really like to take a chance on the California Birkin above, but fearful of the transmission leak and the owner selling so quickly after purchasing what appears to be a very nice car. I've already emailed the seller on these items as well as that the engine and perhaps other components appear to be used based on the cali sticker pic.

 

Any thoughts from the pro's on here would be helpful. Also, if anyone knows about registration in Pennsylvania without a windshield or other concerns, I'm all ears.

Hi Dan, Welcome. In Pa. I recall that you need a windshield that is at least 11 inches tall for inspection purposes. Nice thing about Caterhams and possibly some other sevens, is that removing the windscreen is just a matter of four bolts. And if you have the captive nut modification, you can do it yourself in two minutes or so.

 

I have the normal windscreen for the street and a brooklands type for the track. Very simple to switch back and forth. Come out to NJMP in July for our Seven's Trackday gathering and you can see a bunch of different types.

Anyone know how coolant can get into the exhaust pipes without going through the combustion chamber first? Sounds like a huge red flag. Might "just" be a head gasket, but I would assume worst case it needs either a new head or a new engine and price accordingly.

I would question whether it is transmission or engine oil and where it is weeping from? How many drops per day? I suspect it is not transmission but engine seal (not always a bad thing) - the question is which seal? If it is a minor leak, I would probably leave it, if major then to fix is probably an engine out job. Are you a handy person with the wrench?

 

Having a quite a few old leaky things that subscribe to the Ford Corrosion Protection Program around my garage I am more tolerant of slow minor leaks than most people and just run with them.

Sure - I did this trick on a 351 Cleveland. Head gasket breach into a coolant galley from an exhaust valve exit. The problem is that with sustained high stress running at high RPM it then soon breaches a firing ring and it all goes really pear shaped. May take longer on a road car. A head gasket replacement should fix it. To max a sale price a seller really should fix it since the discount buyers demand will be steep for this uncertainty.

Croc, I'm semi handy. I learned that the engine is a 2008 Ford "Test Motor" that Texas Motor Works purchased in a lot from Ford. Not sure what that means and no real info on how much wear and tear was put on the motors during "testing".

 

I'll try to get more info on the amount of leaking and precise location. My other concern is if I'd get held up at tech for track days for something like a minor leak.

Caterham wind screen will likely not fit Birkin. I tried to swap my Caterham Brooklands windscreen onto my Birkin and it wasn't remotely close. Tho the cars look the same, the dimensions are quite different. If the windscreen is flexible plastic maybe it could be bent to fit? But, the metal frame for the Brooklands was too wide and too deep (or visa versa).

The Kurtis link is obvious. He thought that when he registered/titled it, he could take some really blurry photos to the DMV and tell them it was a replica (or real?) of a Kurtis 500K. Good odds he might find a clerk that could not tell any difference. It didn't work, of course, because he didn't use cycle fenders.
