Now I've always been a fan of white since it is supposedly cooler and more visible... But I'd be lying if I didn't say that the matte black ones don't catch my eye. Seeing as it would be worn in a roadster I'm debating what makes the most sense... It makes it harder that my WCM well soon be flat black and carbon fiber

Small, quick, nimble, VERY DARK/HARD TO SEE car; I might consider a white (or even a brightly colored) helmet as a visual cue for other drivers . . . . just a thought.

I have a black helmet and a blue helmet and have not noticed anything unusual about greater heat. Go with what suits you for track or autox.

For road use I would be looking for bright colors to be visible.

In an open car the white helmet really does make a significant temperature difference especially in a sunny place like SoCal.

Visibility is irrelevant in autox as the course workers will all see and hear the car

more important than choosing color is making sure the helmet has the proper Snell rating of SA2010, which is a automotive sport designation, and some hpde and autocross groups require this rating. A rating of M2010 designates it as a motorcycle helmet, most of these also have a DOT rating which means they are street legal and strangely not all SA rated helmets have a DOT rating.

The M rated helmets are generally not fire resistant. The theory is if the bike crashes, you will likely land far far away from the flames.

Great minds think a like... I used to wear a bright hi-viz orange helmet when I used to ride motorcycles... even had a hi-viz yellow 1-piece suit for a while as well...

Did have the idea of putting a off-road vehicle whip like flag on the WCM... was thinking against that idea recently though.

Part of plasti-dipping my WCM flat black is due to the handful of imperfections in the stainless steel skin of the car. I figured a flat black / textured finish would help mask them to some effect...

Your Ultralite has a stainless steel skin?

I thought they were all aluminum.

The new Snell 2015 standard helmets will be available in October 2015. 2010 is good till then.

This was a superb helmet that I wore when I still rode bikes.

It's an Arai RX7 corsair Colin Edwards Valencia. Very well vented as well. There are red stripes running from front to back over the top of the helmet.

The idea that a black helmet could radiate heat through 1.5" of polystyrene and the foam comfort liner is rubbish. The reason you get hot is that it's hot out and you have 1.5" of polystyrene on your melon.

Skin is polished aluminum not stainless. Rock chips are he'll on a seven body no mater the finish. Plasti dip is a good idea. When it gets tattered just peel it off and reapply.

I wore a gloss black helmet while autocrossing my 7. Even in the heat of a Georgia summer, I had no issues with heat. Of course, in autocross you're only wearing the helmet for a few minutes at a time.

I understand the matte black helmets can have problems with the matte finish peeling over time (I believe it is a coated finish). My current helmet is plain old boring white. If you get a flashy chrome finished shield, it's like wearing a stylish tie with a white dress shirt :cooldude:

Brad, Andrew has had a matt black Super Bandit for 2 or 3 years now, we have had no issue with the finish.

Update: Ended up getting a flat black Pyrotect Helmet with Duckbill. It came with a wing that you can attach with included double stick tape but looks rather flimsy albeit definitely cool looking. Have not yet pulled the trigger on trying to attach it. Did pony up the few extra bucks and got a blue chrome visor to go with it and it completes the deal when I pull up alongside a full-size SUV in my glorified go-kart.
