I didn’t take a photo and wished I had but have to relate this story. The wife and I attended our local LBC’s club’s All British Car Show yesterday. An individual approached me stating he’d learned that I owned the Caterham. He didn’t know a lot about sports cars as he was really into muscle and hot rods. However, he plays Forza 7 on Xbox and his favourite car is a Caterham. He’d never seen one and didn’t know anything about them.

I gave him a brief history on the Chapman and the Lotus seven, then explained how Caterham had bought the rights and continued to improve the Series 3. He had all sorts of questions which I was mostly able to answer however, I had a problem with this one. He asked; how close is the game version to the real car? As I have never played Forza or any game using a controller I was not able to make a direct comparison. I did explain that in the early days of computer games I played Indy 500 with a joy stick and later using a wheel I enjoyed Grand Prix Legions and GP1 and GP2. Those games were fun but at times the computer car didn’t respond as normal cars would and it didn’t really matter which car you were in they all behaved pretty much the same. I’ve been told that modern games are much better especially when it comes to the differences. I suspect that his game Caterham is a fair approximation of the real deal. Forza uses a Superlight R500. I told him that there are newer models like the CSR with up to 2.3 liter, inboard suspensions and even the 620 with a supercharged engine.

He was blown away that he was seeing an actual Caterham similar to the one he races in a game. But, you should have seen his face when I asked if he wanted to sit it the real deal. We always let kids sit in the cars and the parents take photos. But, nothing prepared me for how this guy lit up when he slid into the seat and realized just how small the steering wheel is. Or, how crisp the shifter is, just click, click. Like all kids he didn't want to get out. He knows what hp can do in his truck he could only imagine what it would be like in a tiny car with his butt just inches off the road.

He may feel the need to sell his 454 hot rod truck and look for a Caterham now.

I am not much of a gamer. But a few months back I took my kids to a be driving place near me. They had the full rigs but not sure if it’s forza or some other software.  I had to try the car. Think it was an r400.  

granted I am not very experienced with driving games. But I thought it was much harder than in real life. I think having all those inputs and cues in the real car make it easier to drive at the limit.  In the game I was all over the place. (Some would argue just like real life).

My neighbor has a sim rig similar to the one above. I can't drive it for the life of me. Lack of physical cues and sensations/gforces makes it undrivable for me.

Former pro racer Scott Goodyear runs a company called Toronto Racing Simulators. He has one facility set up in Mississauga and he did have one in cottage country that our little Group of Sevens owners held a special event at. TRS advertises standard to full motion systems, uses either big screens or VR headsets as well as selling everything from parts to complete systems.
