theDreamer Posted August 10 Posted August 10 (edited) I didn’t take a photo and wished I had but have to relate this story. The wife and I attended our local LBC’s club’s All British Car Show yesterday. An individual approached me stating he’d learned that I owned the Caterham. He didn’t know a lot about sports cars as he was really into muscle and hot rods. However, he plays Forza 7 on Xbox and his favourite car is a Caterham. He’d never seen one and didn’t know anything about them. I gave him a brief history on the Chapman and the Lotus seven, then explained how Caterham had bought the rights and continued to improve the Series 3. He had all sorts of questions which I was mostly able to answer however, I had a problem with this one. He asked; how close is the game version to the real car? As I have never played Forza or any game using a controller I was not able to make a direct comparison. I did explain that in the early days of computer games I played Indy 500 with a joy stick and later using a wheel I enjoyed Grand Prix Legions and GP1 and GP2. Those games were fun but at times the computer car didn’t respond as normal cars would and it didn’t really matter which car you were in they all behaved pretty much the same. I’ve been told that modern games are much better especially when it comes to the differences. I suspect that his game Caterham is a fair approximation of the real deal. Forza uses a Superlight R500. I told him that there are newer models like the CSR with up to 2.3 liter, inboard suspensions and even the 620 with a supercharged engine. He was blown away that he was seeing an actual Caterham similar to the one he races in a game. But, you should have seen his face when I asked if he wanted to sit it the real deal. We always let kids sit in the cars and the parents take photos. But, nothing prepared me for how this guy lit up when he slid into the seat and realized just how small the steering wheel is. Or, how crisp the shifter is, just click, click. Like all kids he didn't want to get out. He knows what hp can do in his truck he could only imagine what it would be like in a tiny car with his butt just inches off the road. He may feel the need to sell his 454 hot rod truck and look for a Caterham now. Edited August 10 by theDreamer 5

But a few months back I took my kids to a be driving place near me. They had the full rigs but not sure if it’s forza or some other software. I had to try the car. Think it was an r400. granted I am not very experienced with driving games. But I thought it was much harder than in real life. I think having all those inputs and cues in the real car make it easier to drive at the limit. In the game I was all over the place. (Some would argue just like real life). 1
Vovchandr Posted August 10 Posted August 10 My neighbor has a sim rig similar to the one above. I can't drive it for the life of me. Lack of physical cues and sensations/gforces makes it undrivable for me.
theDreamer Posted August 11 Posted August 11 Former pro racer Scott Goodyear runs a company called Toronto Racing Simulators. He has one facility set up in Mississauga and he did have one in cottage country that our little Group of Sevens owners held a special event at. TRS advertises standard to full motion systems, uses either big screens or VR headsets as well as selling everything from parts to complete systems. This photo page shows a bit of everything including major show set ups. https://torontosimulators.ca/our-racing-area-toronto-sim-racing/
jhenson29 Posted August 12 Posted August 12 I have a small sim rig in my office. I use VR with it (the screen is just to get the VR started). It took a number of months to get a feel for the car rotation based on vision alone. It’s not easy and I am by no means good, but it does get better/easier with some practice. I also think VR is easier than screens, but that’s personal preference. 1
Croc Posted August 12 Posted August 12 It’s 100degF and the car has run hard all morning using up two full tanks of fuel. Now cooling in the shade at lunch. 6

(Taken yesterday) Really nice color choice. I approve of the rollover bar matching paint. I usually prefer the RB to be the chassis color, but in your case, it works very well. Take note of the protection around the bonnet spring! consider applying a layer of protective plastic film behind it to prevent scratches. Heck, just PPF the whole car! 1

Slonie Posted Monday at 10:27 PM Posted Monday at 10:27 PM Parked at Laguna Seca and... Well, this is awkward... (more on this later though — Caterham UK had a legitimate presence at Monterey Car Week, as far as I know that's the first time!) 3 2
Slonie Posted 15 hours ago Posted 15 hours ago I made a new post for the story of Caterham at Car Week, here. As for my own car, well I really wanted to bring it to Monterey and that would have resulted in me spamming this thread for a whole week, but it wasn't meant to be. A continuing electrical issue* (that needs its own thread), and an aborted topside oil change** kept me from being road-ready, and the threat of being out in the sun all day every day and out after dark in a car with marginal night flying abilities caused me to chicken out. So no pictures of my 7 for now! *everything works except for my front turn signals when my headlights are on **turns out my topside extractor could only get about 2qts out, but I have anxiety over a possibly-stripped drain plug from the last oil change so I thought I'd delay the potential discovery of that by not undoing it right ahead of doing hundreds of miles of driving away from home... 1
