Thanks Bruce!  Was going to ask if there is a popular muffler folks use.  Thankfully there is a 2 bolt joint just ahead of the muffler.  Easy to remove to have someone duplicate it.

You could also cut the tip off, and add an offset to bring the tail pipe along the lower chassis rail inboard of the tire to the rear. That may be all you need and still very clean looking. I've seen a few configured that way. Apparently a factory option? If still not quiet enough, there are tip inserts that are also effective.

Found a pic of the factory rear exit exhaust parts.

I expect you'll need to cut the two bolt flange off to fit any typical muffler which are longer. An offset inlet on the muffler would help keep it close to the body.

Agreed with the comments above about hearing loss and how important hearing protection is. Here's a photo of my old Birkin:

FWIW I routed my side exit exhaust to the rear with a leftward-pointing tip to try to pass sound at Laguna; I actually gained a dB lol. I also have a "trackday" exhaust from Caterham with second rear muffler (along with larger, cat-containing main muffler), but have never installed. I'm running a standard muffler with decat collector. At least half of the noise is from the intake so I think it's a losing battle. I always wear helmet/plugs, same as on bike.

Hey all you wild and crazy guys and gals. If you want to be able to hear anything as you get older, wear ear plugs, always, even before startup! The mufflers combined with the wind will eventually damage your hearing and could do it rather quickly. The only time that I don't wear earplugs in my sevenesque cars is when I am wearing a full face fully padded helmets and doing autocross which lasts for about a minute a run or less. I figure there is still a fair amount of racket but the helmet is attenuating a lot of the damaging frequencies to my tender inner ear physiology and I need to hear the groans and chatter of my tires/suspension.  On my motorcycles, I still wear 29 dba attenuating earplugs with my helmets due to the wind and muffler noise. Just sayin'...

From all that I have read, hearing loss is cumulative and most often does not come back after physiological damage. I have over 450k seat miles on motorcycles/open cockpit cars and I can still hear you softly sniggering that I am overly paranoid about protecting my hearing :classic_wink:

To  extend Anaximander's points:  I wear the same foam ear protectors to bed every night.  Quiet sleep is better sleep, and the I believe eight hours of silence every night helps reverse some of that cumulative ear damage cited by Anaximander.  Use that trick of rolling the plugs in one drop of hand or skin lotion before insertion.  Treated plugs insert and stay in place without chafing, plus the lotion makes them more efficient at reducing sound.

Quercitin is a terrific natural nutriment remedy for tinnitus.  Also helps remediate high blood pressure, fights cancer and many other benefits.  About 2 grams per day is an ordinary adult does (1,000 mg morning and night).  Here's an article on the subject:

https://treblehealth.com/quercetin-and-tinnitus/#:~:text=Quercetin is a vasodilator%2C which,may help support your hearing.

I've used plugs and quercitin for years to protect both my hearing and health.  I've been around loud cars and power machines for decades, and the last hearing test I took, the audiologist stated I have the hearing of a teenager.  Of course, genetics could play a part, and perhaps the teenager he was referencing was an acid-rock head-banger.  In any case, quercitin is cheap if you purchase the NOW brand, and there are no negatives - it can only help.

I tried turning down the tip with a BDA-powered Cat, but blasting the soundwaves down onto the asphalt did not provide significant improvement according the DB meter.  Sound is sneaky - it reflects everywhere and often defeats efforts to redirect it.  A true R500-quality side-exit muffler, or a muffled rear-exit exhaust, are the best solutions.  If @Cueball1's tracks are urban tracks with noise limits, an R500-quality side exhaust will provide an attractive and effective solution (IMO, Sevens look best with side exhausts).  I also used a Super-Trapp tip for a while, which has the advantage of easy removability, but the car lost power, and when I removed the tip, it was obnoxious around town.

If it is just about the driver and not a track, extending the exhaust to the rear with a couple mandrel bends spliced together should have the least affect on back pressure with the greatest reduction in noise at the driver's ear.

Tip inserts can be made, tested, and modified with a port forward of the muffler for checking back pressure when driving and a db meter or phone app. It can be a thin, baffle insert with packing or just a 1/8-1/4 rod rolled into a circle/ring and held with screws.

Spec says 1600 Sprint but 4 into 1 headers are usually a 1700 thing

It is a 1600. I have all the build receipts and engine test data.

A very sad day for me.

Cant believe I am having to sell it after waiting so long to buy one again.

Aloha Ray

it would be great to see your 7 and your Alfa stay in HI. There are so few 7s in HI and I know you did a lot to import the car and bring this car to a state of reliability. Good luck with the BAT auction and your upcoming move to off island, to your next adventure.

Stay well,

Jim
