jbcollier Posted July 23 Posted July 23 A very early Caterham Seven, literally in the first batch made, went for $27K. It needed a minor amount of fettling but it was a proper TC equipped car in reasonable nick. That was a good deal for the buyer.

Also that Birkin went for a real nice deal for somebody...

It sold for $28,750 in 2023 and $26,500 in 2024. Well to a point. If I understand correctly the seller paid $26,500 in October so only getting a top bid of $17,750 9 months later might seem like a kick in the teeth but... He's relisted it at $35,000 which is way too far in the other direction. How can the owner think it's appreciated that much? https://www.facebook.com/share/16mJvTRxc1/ A far better presented, better built and documented, well known and admired by so many wonderful lil '62 Lotus S2 sold today for $38,500. I understand it’s his car and he can set the price where ever but, it’s just going to sit there.
Slonie Posted July 29 Posted July 29 It does seem optimistic, but I'd imagine a Facebook Marketplace (or Craigslist) listing has to be priced to deal with the inevitable haggling that will occur. I don't judge someone for that, even though a sufficiently high asking price would keep me from even messaging to ask if there's any room for negotiation. I think BaT did some sellers dirty by listing so many Sevens at the same time, but congratulations to the new owners of the Westfield and Birkin at bargain prices! 2

I think BaT did some sellers dirty by listing so many Sevens at the same time, but congratulations to the new owners of the Westfield and Birkin at bargain prices! Yes, overly optimistic pricing scares away not just the tire kickers but some, perhaps most, legitimate buyers. I’m not sure I’d agree with you on BaT’s decision to put them all up. The Westfield was sold by a well-known dealer and it was their choice to go no reserve. If they needed to hit a particular price point then they would have set a limit. As for the Birkin, it had a reserve that was surpassed. So, the seller got what he thought it was worth. The seller of the Toyota powered Caterham with the Lotus VIN plate sold a MGA last month which had a reserve on it. Looking at that car and the winning bid for it I’d think the high bidder on the 7 if he truly wants it will be able to make a deal. The only outlier is “the green tree frog” Caterham. It may have suffered from the amount of 7’s but then again it may be due to the fast turnaround. Three owners in as many years and only 9 month since the seller bought it. That I think is what spooked buyers more. Also, I did not see bidders who lost out on one car jumping into the next auction. It was very much that bidders picked the car they were interested in and bid on that car. 1

It included a track day at nearby Summit Point. My instructor was an Elise owner and he took me out in my Caterham, with me as the passenger, to show me the fast way around the track. At the first turn he yelled: ”What just happened, the turn-in on this car is instantaneous!”. On the second turn he said:”I keep turning in way too early, in my Elise it takes a moment or two for the car to react to my steering input.” He was shocked at how heavy everything was in his Elise in comparison to my Caterham. FWIW: my X-Flow powered, 5 speed, Dedion on 15” tires was invariably as fast, or faster, around whatever track I was on compared to the standard Elises and Exiges there. I was there in Gettysburg, and ran both the autocross and the track day in my Elise. I had originally planned on doing both in my 1979 Caterham, but I had sold it to a gentleman on Cape Cod before LOG. LOG readily accepts Seven clones. Oddly, there was a shortage of them at LOG43 in Texas, the first LOG to which I brought a Seven. About the reaction to the reaction: I was at an Evolution Autocross School with my shabby Europa S3. The professional autocross instructor did the same thing your track instructor did. When I got my Elise I was not pleased that the steering was so slow. Finally got that fixed with trick steering arms. There was absolutely no learning curve. The first slalom I hit felt perfect. How they should have built all of them.
