The first Locost Project (above) was originally listed by the builder at $900.  The project is local to me in the Phoenix area.  The project was purchased by what looks to be a flipper, who bumped the price to $1,500.  This past week for unknown reasons, he cut the rear portion of the chassis off....sigh....  The ad now says the new owner can easily reattach it.  Sure, no problem...and no price reduction for the addition to the project.  GLWS, as they say...

It previously ran through the auction system with declared engine damage. Looking like it has been sitting on the auction lot in the weather for probably about 18 months. At the buy now, it would cost me another $1500 or so in fees plus I'd need a way to get it here quickly or more fees. Frame/control arm bent left rear. Looks like they moved the spare to the left rear as it was badly bent. Mechanics dream!?!#:classic_laugh:

Yeah, the last I saw was like $2800 with 18 hours to go, maybe they got spooked (no reserve?) and resisted it with the Buy it Now. And there's still a "Make Offer" button too...

 

I was thinking at $3k there's almost nothing to lose, $6800 seems like it could still be a deal for the right person... though if the frame is bent in the rear that's a whole other ballgame.

I dunno- at $6800 I think it would be cheaper (and easier!) to buy a running car. What's that car worth if it were in decent driver condition? Maybe $25k?

Maybe that without crashed history. 

 

However as somebody who's bought too many of these types of cars there's a very wrong mentality that cheaper cars are going to be cheaper in the end of repairs and a full value car can't be afforded so this is the only option. When in truth that's like buying toilet paper one roll at a time instead of in bulk. If you can afford bulk, you're often better off and the poor get punished with more expensive costs which is ironic. 

 

In many cases this $20k value car will end up costing $30k. (For the sake of argument) 

 

That's not counting opportunity cost of having a non running car for years, all calls and part sourcing and dozens of hours of labor.

Trying to source parts in a tariff world is not cheap. Then at the end of it all it is still a salvage title so compromised end-value. 
 

At a couple of thousand you could part it out to make money.
