Croc Posted May 31, 2019 Author Share Posted May 31, 2019 The Datsun A series engine was actually derived from the 1960s BMC A series that used to be in minis and a whole host of British period classics. Datsun bought it under license. I had an A15 in a Nissan Pulsar that I had early on in my driving life. Perfectly functional, reliable but not particularly powerful or refined. I seem to recall over about 80-90 flywheel HP in its standard form. The car for sale seems to have some trickery in its engine so it may have added some ponies. Equivalent to a hot crossflow engine possibly? Plenty of go in that package given the lightness of the car. The deal with that Birkin for auction is you buy it, clean up the body, and fix its flaws. Well, because Caterham acquired the rights to the design/name/etc. to the 7 around 1973, it could be said that any knock-off conceived after that would be a Caterham knock-off. But really, it all traces back to Mr. Anthony Colin Bruce Chapman's design, whatever name it's given. Damn good design, as I'm sure all on here will agree. Used to be owned by a gent in central NJ - attended the NJMP HPDE event one/two years here, a long way back (5+/- years). It was purchased through the now closed classic car dealer in Hopewell, NJ - I did a pre-purchase inspection as a favor. Had obvious non-original welding repairs in the engine bay from a hybrid short/long front replacement (that is a big hit repair). Pedal box wore some scars that were explained by the hit. Steering rack was not original look. Was clearly repaired by a professional who knew what they were doing - it looked like a proper jig repair. I have suspected but ultimately do not believe the wirewheel car is that car but the photos were not good enough for me to confirm one way or the other. It was a full yellow paint car - the wirewheel car is partial. Cosmetics are far better on the car at Wirewheel in ways that I doubt someone would have remediated - would not have been economic.
