  4. #1 rule to avoid backing accidents: Don't back! Anyway, as long as you keep the hand brake adjusted, it's easy enough to push back if need be.

  7. Yeah, I've known people that fill the crankcase with diesel for a while, then changed the oil. Anyway, back in the day, when there were dedicated VW shops around, the rebuilds were quite cheap. Now you're lucky if you can find a mechanic (excuse me, technician) that knows them at all.
  8. I could hook you up with Gordon. Anyway, having a RHD Peugeot engined car, I am happy to see another that is outside the norm. If it's largely 124 based, I should think the hard parts will be available and cheap. Go, man, go!

  13. Boo on the 15%. History is the most important thing on an old racer, and they don't have much. The price might end up low enough for someone to then do the detective work. Or wait till it doesn't sell at this auction and then go find the owner to deal direct.
  14. Nice job. We need all the cooling we can get around here. It's supposed to be about 92 in a couple days, so we're not done with summer yet. Any sheet metal = leather gloves. I even have some leather with Kevlar lining. I usually don't even feel a cut. Just something sticky and look down and stuff has blood on it. Seriously, I wear gloves a lot as the old skin gets thinner.
  15. The easiest way to guarantee compliance would be to attend Tracknight or an SCCA Time Trial event with your car. The regional Chief of Tech would almost certainly be there and you could pick his/her brain. If the District Chief of Tech is there, that would be better. Cheap exposure with a bit of instruction available.
  16. "I'd walk around checking the hubs for uniform heat from side to side with my palm." Sound advice anytime, except for the poor palm. Better to use the back of the hand as the reflex, if hot, will pull away faster.

  18. Peppermint oil is a pretty good repellant. We use it around the deck. The little bastards get under there and drive the dog crazy. Now, I also spread her fur around and that works great. Just now, I'm brushing about 10 pounds of fur a day off the Australian Sheppard. Anyway, the oil must be kept up, so it reeks of the stuff. Rather pleasant anyway.
  19. Should be very interesting. The aluminium nose and fenders should work a charm. I love them.
  20. So, once you have the string attached to the middle gromet on one side, you need to go under the car the secure it to the other side. Just slip the string into the split ring of your key chain and toss it across under the car. Should always come within reach of the other side.

Yeah, I've pulled car trailers all over the US and Mexico and wouldn't buy a single axle. We were towing a Panamericana car (4,000 lb.) from Mexico City to Chiapas and went through 3 tires because they had car tires on it instead of trailer tires. You can always tie up one hub and keep on going, but the main thing is a tandem axle won't pull you off into the ditch (or worse) if a tire goes. As an old tractor trailer driver, Mo is Better.
  22. I also have a tilt trailer, in the for sale pages. Never experienced the problem you suggest. As I see it, the point where weight causes the downward tilt is well to the rear of the point where it tilts back to level.

  24. I never see it discussed, but the thing I don't like about LEDs is that they are fairly uni-directional. When you get several degrees off center following LEDs, they show up poorly or not at all. I see it all the time with turn signals on a cross street. The front turn signal on V2 is not visible until they turn towards me, then I can se it. First noticed on our transit buses' brake lights. In the second lane over, the brake lights are not visible. As an accident reconstructionist, this is not progress. I hope the Caterham units are better.
