  1. Pegasus will sell you several sizes of idle jets and reimburse you for the ones you don't need. I would go down to 50s and see how it runs. My car had too narrow jets and had hesitation for the first 33 years of its life. I had bigger idle jets installed and its like night and day. Pulls nicely through the whole rev range.
  2. My apologies for my very negative reaction. I was caused by the ad claiming that it is Lotus 7 or Caterham. The build seems to be completely different from a standard S3 chassis. The Marketplace ad also headlines it as a Lotus Elise. All very strange. Anker
  3. 6 years is the recommended life span for a set of tires.
  4. You are on the right track. Stronger front sway bar and no or softer sway bar in the rear will correct that problem
  5. Too many bidders with too much money and not enough knowledge about what they are bidding on!
  6. The output is a series of electrical pulses with one missing (where the tooth is missing), It allows the ECU to detect whether the crank is turning and also determine it's position at any point in time because it knows where the missing tooth is. I suspect that is at TDC for cylinder 1. The sensor feeds directly into the ECU. An ECU needs a CPS in order to time the ignition and on a fuel injected car also the fuel injectors. For the toothed wheel to work with an ECU it must have the number of teeth the ECU is designed for and also have the missing tooth in the correct position. As mentioned above, I suspect they all have the missed tooth in the same position. The number of teeth may be an issue.

  10. That treadwear rating is very high. I would prefer a wet tire with a 200 rating.
  11. You can install a new one by installing a rivnut and then screwing the snap onto that. I replaced a couple on mine using that method.
  12. Every conceivable fluid is more important than tools. Engine Oil, Transmission Fluid, Brake Fluid, Coolant Premix, Windshield Washer Fluid, all important!
  13. You may have seen the YouTube review just posted in this forum. It is may car and it is great as is, but I want to make it as perfect as I can!
  14. The big news is that I was unhappy with hesitation between 2 and 3 K RPM. I tried working on timing, new spark plugs, carburetor balancing and adjustment, but no significant improvement. Not being willing to tear down Weber carburetors I took it to a specialist who determined that the idle jests were too small. After they replaced the jets the hesitation was gone. So was spitting out of the carburetors and explosions out of the exhaust. It made a huge improvement to the drivability of the car. The only thing remaining is to deal with some smoke. Today was the last autocross of the season, so my plan is to pull the head, check the valve guides and seals, and take a look at the cylinders. What I can afford to fix I will fix over the winter.

  16. I have been following your quest with interest and empathy. As a recent purchaser of a Caterham in need of TLC I recognize several of the challenges you faced, and am not surprised at all. Sorting out a new purchase on a road trip is not ideal. Good luck! Anker
  17. Mine is also exactly the same. 1987 Supersprint 1700, and also built by Sevens and Elans/

  19. You can help that with a wider diameter master cylinder. I just replace min on my 1987 De Dion, 1700 Supersprint and while the cluch grabs quickly I don't have your problem, even though I stuck with the original diameter master.
  20. I find it curious too. Mine has no understeer. It does have snap oversteer on lifting or braking when cornering, but I am learning. Mine is extremely stiff and has adjustable dampers and springs. Because I don't have a LSD is disconnected the rear sway bar to ensure that the rear tires stay planted on the road. Normally that would induce understeer, but not in my case! Also, what rims and tires are you using? I have 13" rims wearing 225/45R13 Toyo R888Rs on all four wheels.

  22. The trick is to make the front stiffer than the back, Either by stiffening the front sway bar or by loosening the rear, if you have one. I have completely disconnected the rear sway bar on my 1987 1700 Supersprint and have no problem with rear wheel spin. An LSD would also help.
