This well documented 2 owner HPC Black Top (Swindon stage 3) just sold for a mere $34,500. The second owner was the man behind the “For Sevens Only” wide angle rear view mirror that some of us have the privilege of using. Even with some cosmetic problems I believe this was a steal of a deal.

I’ve suggested the new owner join us here on USA7s as he is new to Seven ownership.

Well, if that was a real bid than that was truly a steal of a deal.

However, I have notified BaT about auctions that were won and then days or weeks later the vehicle is up for sale again by the same seller that had it on BaT. One particular red Lotus Europa in California and a red Corvair Spyder convertible here in Ontario jump to mind.

Oh, and BaT really doesn’t care just as long as they get their fees.

Bob Simon was a member on here and a wonderful gentleman. The two of us met when I was shaking down my 2010 CSR in Colorado. Very sadly missed. His Caterham was incredibly well developed over the years.

No-reserve auction. There was nothing to stop a legit bidder from bidding to win the auction. BAT auctions don't really have a fixed end time. They hold the final award for two minutes until there are no other bidders.

Last two weeks had a few 7s hit the market at the same time, Is the pricing reflecting a saturated market?

One of the thinks on my mind is the depriciation of these cars and watching the bottom. In a market of absurd increased values for analog cars including the 911s etc, i continue to be surprised at the falling values with the 7.

nearly new 620s sell for half the original cost. average 420s are seeing similar results.

The pricing for new builds increased in January by some 20% vs LY. Normally id think this should raise values on all 7s but it seems to have had no affect (yet).

One problem is many buyers are looking for the “blue chip” models like the Lotus Elise that has had a HUGE up tic in sale prices of late. Very few Lotus 7’s fall into this category and most used Caterhams do not. There is a very small market for Caterhams and that is broken down further into sub groups such as, classic style, all out performance and a host of in between models. Most buyers have a price point they wish to stay under and with the economy as it is and the future not looking good the used Caterham market has softened. That is why recent sale prices are lower than what one would expect, as you point out.

Dealers & resellers are still asking high dollars but the cars aren’t selling. I know of one specific Caterham that has been for sale since November 2023. The seller has dropped the price $14,000 and still has not sold the car. (Mind you, I believe there are problems with the car and I know there are with the seller but that’s another story.)

A lot of great insight in your post, and I don't want to go way off topic, but "the economy as it is", is... very strong?

Solid GDP growth, unemployment very low, asset prices at all time highs, discretionary spending robust and insensitive to inflation... The backdrop is super favorable to the leisure car market, I would say.

Everything else you say, I think you are 100% right.

Don't try to put reason behind the current auto market. It's been running without logic since Covid and continues to be only certain in continuing not to make sense.

This perspective varies greatly on your age and your networth.

For those with high value 401ks and assets, it's never been better. For others who are still trying to aquire assets and 401ks themselves > the costs of goods, rent, housing, fuel, daycare, electricity, college etc are extremely prohibitive to success.

So in short, if you're buying multi million dollar cars competition from others is huge and values rise as the wealthy are getting wealthier in this economy.

If you're buying a $35,000 toy the market is shrinking in these times of rising costs and uncertainties.

This can be a whole another topic.
