  1. This: A custom vehicle is a vehicle at least 25 years old and of a model year after 1948 or built to resemble a vehicle at least 25 years old and of a model year after 1948. stop there. Don't let the rest of the emissions and other garbage get to you.
  2. Tom, like everyone else, is cautious on answering the phone. Leave him a message and he will return your call. He uses Google fi, whatever that is. it appears your chassis was not built for Crossflow mounting. If the pesky oil pump van be worked around, then fabing up mounts to the existing Zetec chassis mounts is the way. Tom has an account here but he doesn't get on much.
  3. @3Ducs I just spoke with Tom Carlin at Birkin. He says Crossflow mounts were not like the Zetec mounts. They were more like Caterham type bolted to the frame top. However, Tom doesn't recommend doing this on your chassis. He recommends building mounts using the horizontal prongs in place. Tom says customers can call him for Birkin support.
  4. Based on what reference point? The chassis center line?
  5. TITLE and register as a replica or reconstructed vehicle. Last time I checked. Since my car is over 25, I'll be registering as a Classic. Nobody at the DMV will know what a Caterham is, it won't be in the system, and they really don't care. It is what you say it is and have photos. If a DMV officer starts picking you apart with "that looks like a race car", take your stuff and respectfully withdraw your application. Get a different person at a different office on another day. But most everyone knows what a Cobra is. THAT is a recognized vehicle. However Cobras are registered are ways you can register. Just ask. Don't oversell your situation to the person at the window. They really don't care. The information on your title is more important to get right for post-ownership transferring. Not all states have kit car or replica so RCVE is more recognized. Registration is just a tax system. As long as you're paying something, they really, really don't care. I would call Craig Eubanks at Speedstar in Pasadena or Jeff Sloan at British Auto Specialists in FtWorth
  6. Can we safely assume the ball joints are Spitfire/GT6 items? Would it not be a press out and replace proposition? Pressed out of this?: https://mossmotors.com/661-095-ball-joint For $15 dollars, I can tear one up to find out.
  7. There are old stock MGB633 out there but I think I was reading on Merlin that these are superceded by a new item that replaces the 1144 and 1155 compounds by backing the 1144 with a higher temperature backing layer giving the heat tolerance of 1155, and removing some nasty offensive materials to suit the greenies. "Mintex's new MRM1802 compound replaces the Mintex 1144 compound and some 1155 applications. This MRM1802 is a medium friction compound specifically developed for track day, Circuit, Rally and Historic racing. Encompassing an average friction of 0.43 µ MRM1802 offers the controllability and positive feel of M1155, while the new thermal underlayer increases high temperature performance and longevity. MRM1802 is also Eco friendly to Euro 4 standard, with no copper or other rare earth resources. It also takes less energy to manufacture." Perhaps searching for "MGB533-MRM1802" will get current results.
  8. Have to call Moss this week
  9. Not finding MGB533 M1144 for Spit on Mosssy. Greenies, yes. And there's an interesting alloy 4 pot upgrade for 14 types. Need to know the OE pad pattern and seals for those.
  10. I lost control a long time ago! Balance may become something I work on eventually, but for now and the foreseeable future, I can only accomplish just getting the car back on the road with a few upgrades thrown in. Spring rates, brake bias, corner balance, yea, fun stuff waiting for me to play with later on.
  11. Hopefully this answers the pad question. Now, can we have a good row over dampers? Is it stiff shocks and soft springs, or soft shocks and stiff springs?
  12. OK, Im getting a set of Mintex 1144 compound and binning the new pads I have as I don't know anything about them. Who do I get Mintex from? Here is a gem: https://www.triumphexp.com/forum/spitfire-and-gt6-forum.8/mintex-brake-pads-yes-virginia-they-do.1792317/ What you need to know per Stephen Spandorf: "Looking at the Spitfire: The part number MGB533[M1144] is for the type 14 caliper as fitted to the Mk3 onwards." https://www.burtonpower.com/brake-pads-hi-spec-sva-ultralite-2-caliper-mgb535m1144-hi.html
  13. All I can say is I made sure I got the 7 before I got married. Then I made sure I got a wife that would fit in a 7. Unfortunately, I didn't get a wife that would share my enthusiasm for 7s. Too late to return her. C'est la vie'!
  14. I could forgive that as long as they hand thread my nuts
  15. Could have two dots. A red and yellow, IIRC, one is for valve stem and the other is for a balance high side?
  16. You can do it faster wirh 80 psi 😄
  17. I'm thinking of something that incorporates ear protection as well. Without looking like I'm wearing a full MC helmet. So far, a skydiving full face like the Cookie is close. But I want even more minimal for fast road driving.
  18. Can we have a picture of one of those wheels?
  19. Correct. The lower pressure is part of the road holding and ride comfort for what should be a fairly stiff suspension, taking some of the loading off the bushes. You want tires that give before they break traction. Racers prefer 13" for the taller walls.
  20. Ditto.. Or any car for that matter? Correct tire pressure varies by automobile application and recommended tire size based on engineering calculations and a lot of tests. Not what is on the tire. Noted, you did not say the exploded tire is one of your 7 tires, and you did not ask for recommendations for tires for a 7.
  21. I measure both front and rear bonnet hooks to be 11 mm wide. The toggle latch shackle is 14mm wide, inside width. My toggle latch is not the same as yours. I hope this is helpful.
  22. Much love for the Uniroyal Rain Expert 3 on the UK club. Otherwise, it's a 1,300 lb or less, car. Get cheap Kumho Solus TA11 and drive to the grocery store.
  23. Ive got both of those on my Cat. I think the Terry spring hooks are larger than the rear latches. I can measure them tomorrow. It's very likely Chris at Redline UK, will have those latches. I can't imagine the hook breaking!
  24. Slow down for the miniature deer on Big Pine Key. I got my ticket! You may find this thread interesting
