New Birkin representative for eastern USA
yellowss7 replied to Tbox56's topic in General Sevens Discussion
Congrats Tom. Looks like you might have to take a trip to the East this fall to do a quality control track test. . Tom -
Hi Bruce, it's been almost 20 yrs since I assembled mine using standard jack stands. My question to you is how much help do you have? When I assembled mine, I did everything on the stands, including the motor and gearbox. So when it came time to put it on the ground, I was worried about the balance and the stands being pulled/tipped when lowering one end. I had four friends hold on to the back end as I lowered the front, just to make sure it didn't slip. If you have it up 28 inches, I'm just wondering how you get it on the ground as you add weight. The Regular Summary of Classified Ads of Se7ens Found For Sale
yellowss7 replied to Croc's topic in Cars For Sale
Vlad, In the UK they used a cable for the clutch. For the US, a hydraulic clutch was usually used because of the longer cable run for a LHD vs the RHD. Mine has a Hydraulic clutch, although I can attest that they didn't really think that thru, as I had to modify the slave cylinder mounting and use a clevis to attach the slave to the clutch arm. When I had called the Caterham engineer to ask if there was a part I need to make the connection, he replied... " we never did a left hand Dry sumped RoverK before, let me know how you make out" That car is not a dry sumped one though. Tom -
I seem to recall that i have a pulley that effectively slows down the spin rate on my Alternator to allow for the higher rev range when on track. I think it doesn't begin to charge at less than 3000 rpm. Maybe something similar in your case?

Jim, I seem to recall when I assembled my car they they just press fit into the rubber gasket, the trim ring just presses in as well. A bit of a pain to get them in but I'm pretty sure there are no bolts or screws involved. Tom

Obviously had to convert to Clams to get lift. :>) Clams RULE!!!

I have the MBE from SBD and I had Steve do a remote tune. Worked fine.

The nice thing about Caterhams builds is that it really is just an assembly, no fab necessary. 80 hours total time is about what it took and I'm no mechanic. Take your time. And enjoy the process. PS, the key to reliability is preventive maintenance IMO. Yellow has been Autoxed or Tracked since new and it just needs a little routine TLC. Kitcat, Yellow is in no way comparable to Mighty Mike's build. He's a craftsman. I'm not worthy. :svengo:

I'm gutted. Scott was a fixture at our NJMP 7s track weekends. Great attitude, good friend. And very good auto crosser. I will definintely miss him. Rest in Peace Scott. Tom

Andy, I just saw that you have a K series in your car. That engine is really light and the lighter springs would definitely be more appropriate to your car. My K series car seems tightly sprung on normal road driving, but on track it handles beautifully with a bit of roll that transmits excellent feel. Tom

On my 2000 S3 Caterham, I think i have stock 200lb fronts and 150 rear with Stock Bilstein shocks. And the green bush front sway bar and the rear bar set to the stiffest setting. Handles like it's on rails. It is sprung softer than my Orange SV which was set up with Nitron Adjustible shocks and who knows what spring rates. probably a lot stiffer springs as it's got way less roll than the Yellow car.

Paul, I believe that the Caterham branded passenger seat in Orange is made by Tillet. It is slightly different than the driver's side Tillet in a couple ways, Its headrest is higher and is raked a bit more forward which may affect driving posistion with a helmet on. I believe it is slightly narrower, but not 100% sure. Finally, it does not have the side holes that the driver seat has that allow the lap belts to slide thru the seat opening. I believe they mount similarly, and I think that Tillet offers several different width seats. Original owner Karl, had them installed, so I'm not sure of all the particulars. Tom
