The MCC 7 should probably be classified as a project...it's less complete than the Dutton.

Quite right. I normally do use project in the description. Fixed now - thanks for the spot

So the undated Zetec powered, 5sp., Caterham, without a Caterham mfg plate, just sold for $45,500 on BAT. It was a nice late 90's/early '00's notch frame Cat with 8K miles on the clock. Worth every bit of, say, $27,500. Maybe a bit less.

So, how did it get to $45,500? More than it would cost to buy a new, turnkey SV from Beachman Motors, with similar power, and all new everything.

It was beautifully photographed and a traditional BRG color with a yellow racing stripe. And it had a driving video that blew everyone's mind, except those of us who have se7ens and can say, yep, pretty accurate. So add a few bucks for that, but $45,500???????

Seller, 911r, is a very experienced, and admired, Bringatrailer seller. Fantastic photos helped a lot. When the ad went up I knew that the car would go for higher than market value. Interesting to note that in the video the car had old, hard tires on it, so it easily skidded around, which made for an exciting video.

His ad and video serve as the new model for maximizing the sale price of a Se7en. I'm not sure if I found it more interesting that three different bidders were still in the running after it broke $40k, or that all the negative comments regarding the price posted by a Caterham dealer didn't make anyone flinch. Regardless, I hope the new owner feels it's worth every penny once he has the opportunity to drive it hard, and that he joins the forum.

I was the 2nd place bidder on that 45.5k Caterham. Obviously the photos and video were spectacular, but I also really liked the stance of the car, the wheels, the old-style fenders, the rear tire, the intake filter setup, and the general patina of the whole package. I'd never seen a 7 that I liked as much. In my mind it was worth it to pay above market to have it now, in the config that I liked. Alas, I didn't win -- now I've emailed a US dealer to see if they can replicate it. From the looks of it that is a 1-2 year process :/

Thank you for the comment.

I was having the same feeling as you, contrary to the descendants. Obviously you and the winner really liked the package and you think it's worth whatever. Due to limited availability of 7's in the states and the amount of different packages, when you see one that fits your criteria and it's available now it's worth getting even though there is a considered "premium". I honestly wasn't even in the market for a 7 when I came across mine and it was worth going across the country to check it out, buy it, ship it and deal with the issues that it had.

As I get older and am in a better financial situation, I find it easier and easier to justify any cost for having things done now, instead of having something cheaper (that often needs fixing) that I wouldn't be able to enjoy for years to come.

I couldn't put a price on the satisfaction of being an owner for the last few years.

Good luck in your searches. This is a good place to keep an eye on listings.

Did you use the Caterham designer tool on their website? What spec did you end up making? Nothing available in the California dealership right now?

Yeah, I've played around with it:

https://www.caterhamcars.com/en/configurator?pagemode=web&configuration=%2B420%2BCLB%2BBPTPVGS%2BW7I%2BIC7PDYP%2BNBS%2BPNBPDYP%2BRBCPGBS%2BSZ3%2BFLR%2BRPC%2BGS5%2BLSD%2BLFW%2BDSO%2BSTK%2BRAB%2BBST%2BORC%2BAOYPSLA%2BBIG%2BMCP%2BINTPINC%2BDSHPDSC%2BMAP%2BCST%2BLRSPCLS%2B4PH%2BMOMPMOL%2BHTR%2BSSF%2BFIR%2BONC%2BOFW%2BORW%2BPIPPBLK%2BAFCPBKP%2BCPCPBKP%2BSWL%2BLHL%2BLPO%2BINPPCAW%2BESE%2BMBC%2BSRB%2BWAR%2BASNPCAW%2BHDOPITV%2BNAU%2BNRM%2BNHO%2BNBG%2BBOOPITC%2BFBT%2BDTK&width=1920&height=1080

My concerns:

1) Green color seems darker than the green on the BaT 7. I definitely want the lighter color

2) I'd want to retrofit old style fenders (possible to order from factory?)

3) stance on BaT 7 looks more aggressive -- perhaps related to 16" HPC wheels, perhaps suspension config

4) I prefer the exhaust on the BaT car (skinnier with heatshield). Is that possible with the newer engines?

*If any dealers want to help me out, msg me*

Which dealer is the California dealership? Hillbank? I didn't see anything similar to what I wanted there

The old style front “wings”/fenders are known as “Clams” as in clamshell. I have a 2000 Caterham and when I ordered it they were still available although I heard that they only did a couple with them that year. I specced mine with the wide track front end which was never usually done but the standard tires do just fit within the width of them.

The nice thing is that you can stick 10 inch wide Hoosier slicks under them no problem for autoxing.

Downside is you can’t watch your front wheels bounce up and down when driving. But you can always buy a second Caterham with the cycle fenders if you get the urge to see them. Worked for me  Good luck with your search.

I suggest you give a few Caterham dealers a call across the country. They all have different supply order books and what one does not have, another quite likely does. At least one dealer has one of the new retro look Caterham supersports (with clams) on order - no idea if it has been sold or assigned. You are best to call not email - this is old school car selling.

I took a pass on a Seven about a month ago and regretted it and said well I'll keep an eye out and when the right one comes along I'll buy it.

I suggest you continue watching the used car auctions. Last week, I bought the silver and red Caterham that preceded the one you bid on at BaT. It had a big collection of spare parts that included the exact same fenders and wheels you like. I could mount the fenders and wheels that came in the parts bin with my car, pay $4k for a paint job and have virtually the same car for less than $34k by September.

That's not to say the car I purchased is superior in every respect. My car is titled in Utah as a 93 Caterham. The California, 67 Lotus title is a good thing to have if you live in California. My car has a 218 hp Vauxhall engine with performs better than the Zetec but is about 30 pounds heavier and is difficult to find parts for. Mine is Red and Silver rather than Green and Yellow. Otherwise I got essentially the same car for 40% less money.

The concerning thing about the green and yellow car was the lack of provenance. The listing didn't explicitly say it was a Caterham and it didn't say the production year. There were no records prior to 2015. People following the auction concluded there wasn't even a Caterham maker's plate and the seller didn't refute that conclusion. If a buyer is paying the average price, those things can be overlooked but the buyer paid 60% over average price for comparable cars. The car I bought came from the original owner and has all records since the start of the build. That car sold for 60% more than comparable cars because of the photographs. Objectively, it's not 10% better than other cars sold in the last year but it sold for 60% more because the seller hired a professional photographer.

You know the fenders you like and the wheels you like. Decide what engine and title you need and keep an eye out for those things at auction. It will come up within the next few months. Pay $29k for the car and set aside $5k to set it up the way you like. You'll be in a better car for $10k less money by November.

And hit me up if you want to buy some clamshells or Chitty Chitty Bang Bang fenders as I call them.

I have been looking at sevens off and on for a while now and this Caterham 480 caught my eye, https://vintageracecarsales.com/portfolio-view/2013-caterham-seven-480/

Wondering if anyone knows the history of this car? It appears to have been used in media reviews while at Hillbank then sold to the first owner in Wisconsin and acquired by Kim at vintage race car sales. Based on the weekly cars for sell in this thread, it looks to have been put up for sale more than 2 years ago and still hasn't sold. I assume it hasn't sold due to the high price but wasn't sure if it had a tarnished history. I see most Caterhams in the $30-40k range but with this one having the Duratec and being a newer build what would be a fair price for this car? Thanks.
